Agni knocked on Tobias’s dormitory door, not looking forward to the coming encounter with the mercenary. She found him unsettling; a human who could kill a Physic and Leash pair was unheard of and this man had killed four, not to mention his mental blocking capabilities. She shifted uncomfortably at the thought of the last time she had tried to read his mind. She heard movement on the other side of the door seconds before it cracked open. A single eye peered at her through the opening, the same eyes she saw that day on the transport truck. “Agni of the Pyre. something you need?” Tobias spoke without opening the door any further. She felt uncomfortable hearing him address her by her full title, but she refused to let it show. “I'm here to take you to your lesson with the Physics and Leashes you'll be training.” she said curtly, feeling her flat responses would make her appear more in control of the situation. She was one of the most powerful people on the planet, one average human would not unsettle her. Tobias paused for only a second before opening the door fully, the sight that came nearly put Agni on her heels. There was hardly any skin left that wasn't scared. “Come in.” Agni held her position in the door frame “or don't” was all he said as he turned to walk back into his room, the scars covered his back as well. Agni watched and then deliberately looked away as he dressed, watching as he donned a simple pair of pants and a long sleeve shirt pulling his thigh holster around his leg and his .45 into it. He finished off the ensemble with a pair of boots, tucking his pants into them, an old practice that was second nature to Tobias at this point. He rose from his chair, tapping his boots on the floor to check and make sure they were secured before exiting the room, closing the door behind him. “After you.” he said.

They walked in silence through the corridor until they reached the elevator. As the door chimed open they entered and Agni tapped the button to take them to the basement where the training area was located.

“Eight pairs.” Agni said

“What?” Tobias replied

“You will be training eight pairs for the next few months. This will be the test group to determine if this program will be worth continuing. All of them are level one pairs of varying degrees…”

“Varying degrees”?” Tobias interrupted.

“Pairs are usually determined by the advancement of the Physic. Level one Physics, what we commonly refer to as Mumblers, are capable of hearing the strongest thought in a person's head. This makes them ideal for interrogations and assisting in criminal investigations.” Agni explained, slightly annoyed at being interrupted. “When the Physics abilities advance beyond this the pair is advanced to the next level.” she finished her train of thought.

Tobias chuckled “So I’ve gone from working with greenies to training greenies. Fantastic. Well we might as well start somewhere.
